While out at a bike show in Ohio this summer (2003) I spotted this plunger Hoske tank on a table for sale. We've seen this shape tank in other photos, but I've never seen one before with an aluminum trim panel on the top like this one has. There's no tool box under this cover, it's purely decorative. I've seen Hoske tanks with tool boxes bolted on top, or even pads - but those usually have 4 recessed screws holding them on. This one has just three. It's amazing to think that there are still discoveries like this out there to find, even after 30+ years of looking! There were 5 or 6 other BMW tanks for sale on this table (two other Hoskes visible just to either side of the red tank). I could not decide whether this was a Hoske shape that I'd captured on film before or not. Believe it or not, only about half the tanks I photograph make it online, because most others are styles that are already well documented. Perhaps it was just the color that made it look different, but I thought it was worth sharing. Another view of the same tank. This one is for a /2 twin. I wish I new what this tank was. It ALMOST looks like a Heinrich that was heavily altered. Note the extreme sidecar strut clearance notch that it had in the front right hand corner. A view of the other side. This tank was very heavy, so I just don't think it's a factory job. Anybody else have some good guesses? This very clean R69S with Hoske was up at the 2003 Mayday rally as well. Actually I think it won an award up there during the judging. It was a well executed restoration. Used Heinrich tanks are often found without mounting brackets, so the new owners are forced to figure out how things might go together. Here's a photo that might help you /5-/7 Heinrich owners. This bottom view clearly shows the rear tank mount. This mount fastens to the stock BMW rear tank rubbers, and then travels up to a single long bolt that passes up into the tool box on top of the tank.
This Hoske is on a 1959 R50 conversion. The engine is a cut-down 1974 R90/6. It will soon be fitted with a ATP turbo - which will be something to see (and hear)! |
